Denzel Washington Comforts Will Smith After Slapping Chris Rock

The Oscars took a bizarre turn on Sunday evening after Chris Rock made an insensitive comment about Jada Pinkett Smith – referring to her as G.I. Jane because of her short hair. Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggles with alopecia and hair loss recently.

Will Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor thanks to his amazing performance in King Richard but after Rock’s comments about his wife, Smith approached the comedian on stage and slapped him across the face on live TV, returned to his seat and yelled:

“Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth”

Following the altercation, several celebs went up to comfort Smith who was clearly upset from the comments, including Denzel Washington, Tyler Perry and Bradley Cooper.

Journalist Scott Feinberg said in a Tweet on Sunday night:

“During the commercial break, Will Smith is pulled aside and comforted by Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry, who motion for him to brush it off,”

“Will appears to wipe tears from his eyes as he sits back down with Jada, with Denzel comforting Jada and Will’s rep by his side.”

Washington approached Smith on the stage, puts an arm around his friend and speaks to him for a moment, before they both take their seats again.

At the end of the evening, Smith accepted the Oscar for ‘Best Actor’ reciting a quote told to him by Washington:

“At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you,”

“I want to apologise to the Academy. I want to apologise to my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me,”

“Art imitates life. I look the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams, but love will make you do crazy things . . . [hopefully] the Academy invites me back.”

A bizarre situation all round.
