Johnny Depp has explained on the stand why he lied about how he injured his finger.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor launched a defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard in 2019, after the Aquaman star described herself as a victim of domestic abuse in a 2018 article she penned in The Washington Post. The trial started Monday 11 April in Fairfax, Virginia.
Depp took to the stand to attempt to clear his name against Heard’s accusations that he was a domestic abuser.
While on the stand, Depp was asked about a incident that took place in 2015 in Australia which resulted in the tip of his finger being cut off. The actor claims this was the result of Heard throwing vodka bottles at him while in the middle of an argument.
Depp admitted that he lied to the medical staff when they questioned what happened. He said:
“I lied because I didn’t want to disclose that it had been Ms Heard that had thrown a vodka bottle at me and then took my finger off. I didn’t want to get her in trouble… ”
“I tried to just keep things as copacetic and as easy as possible for everything. I did not want to put her name in that mix.”
Heard denies throwing the bottles at Depp and her lawyers previously pointed out that the actor had told the hospital staff he had caused the injury to himself accidently.
Depp had previously said that his only goal in all of this is the truth…
