A Subway restaurant in the United States is facing criticism after displaying a sign outside that made a joke about the OceanGate Titan submersible incident.

The attempt at humor, however, did not go over well, as making light of a tragic event involving the loss of five lives in the depths of the ocean was deemed inappropriate.

The OceanGate submersible was on a mission to explore the wreck site of the Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 600km off the coast of Newfoundland.

However, contact with the surface was lost about an hour and a half into their dive, when debris suggested a catastrophic problem causing the submersible to implode, resulting in the instant death of all five passengers on board.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the management at a Subway location in Georgia thought it was appropriate to make a joke about it. The sign displayed outside the Rincon Subway restaurant read: “Our subs don’t implode.”

Naturally, this sign did not sit well with many people who saw it, considering the insensitivity and timing of the joke.

Reports indicate that the store manager at the particular Subway location confirmed that the sign has been removed since then, with no further comments provided.

A Reddit post discussing the incident garnered a significant response, with individuals expressing their opinions on the matter. While some engaged in a debate about whether the joke was more tasteless than the food served at Subway, many criticized the insensitivity of the sign.

On Twitter, a user shared a photo of the sign, commenting, “This is at your store in Rincon, GA. Not only is it distasteful, it’s just sad. Do better.”

Another tweet stated, “This is what we are doing now? Making fun of people who lost their lives.” Many others expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing the poor taste and lack of empathy displayed by Subway.

In response to the backlash, a Subway spokesperson stated, “We have been in contact with the franchise about this matter and made it clear that this kind of comment has no place in our business. The sign has since been removed.”
