Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars on Sunday evening after slapping Chris Rock but he refused, the Academy says.
Smith very publicly slapped Chris Rock after the comedian compared Will’s Wife, Jada Pinkett Smith to G.I Jane, which was highly inappropriate and insensitive as Jada has been very open about her hair loss journey due to alopecia.
The events organizing body said it had started “disciplinary proceedings” against the actor.
In a statement, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said:
“Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, [but] we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”
It also announced it had:
“initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct”.
The Academy has said action may be taken at the next board meeting on 18 April which may include:
“suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions,”
Smith has since issued a public apology to the comedian he ‘assaulted’ on live TV. A source close to Rock has claimed he “had no idea” about Pinkett Smith’s alopecia diagnosis.
The plot thickens…
